Discussion 28.11.13

"Gone Missing With My Most Recent Exhalation," was the name of the chapter discussed in class today. The most important part of this chapter to me was the birth of Aminata's daughter, May. The chapter introduces a few new, important characters like Daddy Moses, for example. However, I think the highlight of this chapter was May's birth. Aminata is once again a single parent who has to raise a baby alone, while also taking care of herself. This was a difficult time, as Aminata did not even have a job or a home (for herself) yet. I keep finding myself amazed by her courage and strength every time something new and exhausting happens to her. She is such a resilient woman and I commend her attitude. She always is able to pick herself up after being pushed down and finds herself back on her 2 feet, ready to work and fight. I know how much Aminata loves children so I know she will adore May just as much as she loved and cared for Mamadu, who was stolen from her arms. Something that I picked up on and liked was the fact that May is born free. Her mother is not a slave and hence, she is not a slave or born into slavery. I think that this will be good for her in the future because she can have her own life and make her own decisions, unlike Aminata was able to do since she was abducted. I am looking forward to see what happens to May in the future.
